A Little Lunch Note…A Huge Deal

As some of you know, I work in consumer PR here in Chicago. I don’t plan on writing much about work on here, but I recently helped launch a campaign for my client Lunchables that I think is too cute not to share!

It’s called the “Lunch Note Promise” campaign and essentially what we’re doing is asking parents and caregivers to promise to drop a note of encouragement into their child’s lunch. For every parent that logs onto www.lunchnotepromise.com to make that promise, the Lunchables team will donate a meal to children and families in need through Feeding America, which serves an estimated nine million children each year.  The goal is to turn 100,000 promises into up to 100,000 meals.

This video explains it all perfectly…

Cute, huh?! I helped launch the campaign for my client last week in New York, which is why I haven’t been able to post much lately. We partnered with Olympic gymnast and Dancing with the Star’s winner, Shawn Johnson.

Shawn visited some kids at the 92nd St. Y in New York City to share her secrets to success…the encouragement she got from her parents and mentors. She also dropped off a $10,000 donation from Lunchables, so the Y could purchase some new gym equipment for the kids.

The kids got some 1 on 1 time with Shawn to practice their gymnastics and hula hooping. Check out some photos-

I think everyone had a great time with Shawn. She is a sweetheart and really great with the kids. Now that the event is over, we’re just working away to reach 100,000 promises.

Will you pretty please help my team donate a meal to a kid in need? It’s super easy! Just go to www.lunchnotepromise.com and click to make a promise.

Thanks in advance!

(Major props to the Weber Shandwick Lunchables team- Alan, Jody, Kate, Tiasha, Laura, Dan and Jenn for pulling off this launch and being a blast to work with!)

My Best Friend’s Wedding

As I mentioned in my previous post, this past weekend Luke and I were in Toledo, OH for my best friend Julia’s wedding. Julia and I met in high school, lived together in college and have kept in touch post-college. She’s been there with me through thick and thin, and knows me better than any other friend.

Julia’s wedding was absolutely beautiful. It was a perfect day- 75 without a cloud in the sky. All us bridesmaids met at Julia’s house around 11am and after some bagels (gotta load up on those carbs!) and mimosas, we helped Julia slip into her beautiful trumpet-style dress.

I had arranged ahead of time with the bridesmaids to get her small presents to complete the “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” saying, which I think she really liked. I was in charge of the “something blue” and got her a hanky embroidered in blue with her initial and the date.

After some pictures, we all headed over in a limo to Corpus Christie church in Toledo, which is a modern building with a lot of tall windows to let in all that sunlight. Her mom had arranged for a four person string quartet to play Pachelbel’s Canon as the bridesmaids walked down the aisle (I’ll never get sick of hearing that georgous song!).

Then Julia appeared with her dad and the trumpets began…

Julia’s wedding is to be continued as I was a real dum dum and forgot to get my camera battery out of its charger. Grrr.

Since I don’t have any pictures of my own to share, I’m going to wait until some good ones pop up on Facebook. You will want to see the pictures, trust me! Words alone wouldn’t do justice the beauty of her recpetion.

PS- congratulations Julia and Jake! Your wedding was amazing and you make a wonderful couple.

Our Flower Girl’s Favorite

This weekend Luke and I were in Toledo, Ohio, my hometown, to celebrate my best friend’s wedding (I’ll post more about it next week). We got home late last night around 1:30 a.m. to a sleeping house full with my parents, aunt and uncle and their two little girls, who moved this weekend from Denver to Toledo.

One of their girls  is 3 ½ years old and will be serving as our flower girl in our wedding. I’ve always had a special relationship with our flower girl. She was the first baby we had for a long time in our family and I absolutely adore children. She calls me cousin “wuzzy.” Here’s a picture of me and our flower girl from a couple years ago.

However, no matter how much our flower girl likes me, I must admit she likes Luke a little more. From the first time she met Luke, or “Batman” as we’ve taught her to call him, our flower girl instantly loved him. He chased her, played games with her and teased her. What little girl wouldn’t love that, right?

After they played for an hour that first meeting (about the time this photo was taken), it was time for our flower girl’s nap. When her mom took her upstairs to her room, we all laughed when she started screaming “BATMAAAAAAN!!! I want BATMAN!” Her affection for Luke hasn’t changed much over the past two years.

In fact, we awoke to a similar situation this morning. I was the first downstairs to the kitchen to greet our flower girl while she ate her breakfast. “Hi!” I exclaimed, “give me a hug.” She looked at me questioningly…”Where’s Batman?” Despite the new Madeline series book in my hand, her excitement to see Luke couldn’t be contained.

But I don’t mind. It makes me really happy that Luke is a natural with kids. As someone who wants children of my own, it’s always been one of his qualities that I like the most. If our kids like him half as much as little Maddy does, I think we’ll have a very happy family.

We Need More Couple Friends!

This past weekend Luke and I went up to Saugatuck, MI to celebrate Luke’s roommate’s 30th birthday party. Fourteen of us, mostly couples, rented this awesome house near the beach and it was so much fun!

We played “guys vs. girls” Catch Phrase, took a wild ride on the Michigan dunes, went out to an amazing dinner and hit the dance floor at a local club/pizza parlor. It was a totally different dynamic than what I’m used to because everyone was there with their significant other, so the whole weekend was about having fun within the group vs. meeting someone new.

Since Luke and I are relatively young (27 and 25) many of our friends in Chicago haven’t settled down into serious relationships. While we love all our single friends and have fun watching them navigate the dating scene, I sometimes wish we had more couple friends to hang out with.

I hate to create a divide between “single” and “attached,” but when you’re in a comitted relationship your idea of fun can change a bit. Sometimes I’d rather have some couples over for dinner and board games than go out to a crowded bar. Does that make me lame?

So why don’t we just make more plans with couples? Well it’s not always that easy. Between our busy schedules, plans already made with our unattached friends and weekend travel, there isn’t much time to forge a new friendship with a couple. Also, it’s hard to find a couple that both of us really click with.

I’m looking forward to the day when more of my friends here in Chicago find mates and settle down. Then maybe they’ll be as excited as I am about making a pot roast and playing euchure on a Friday night. :)
